In a recent interview Adam Driver says he thinks he’s done for good with Star Wars, however he doesn’t sound happy about that. Driver of course played Ben Solo/Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy, but he did die in the final film. Just another reason The Rise of Skywalker is pretty universally disliked. However as we all know, Driver was willing to come back and helped develop the script for a movie called The Hunt for Ben Solo. This movie would obviously have seen Solo return to active duty in the franchise.
The movie was approved up until it got to Disney head honcho Bob Iger who said no. Iger’s reasoning was that Solo had dies and they didn’t want to keep reviving dead characters. If only he had been so resolute when J. J. Abrams asked him to bring back Palpatine.
Speaking with “The Rich Eisen Show,” Driver said, (transcript via Variety)
“Yeah, it’s over… No more Star Wars. We tried to do one more,” said Driver “but they’re like, ‘No, he’s dead.’”
“We worked on it for a few years, really and earnestly. We got a script together that was really good with Scott Burns, Rebecca Blunt, and Soderbergh and I. We all worked on it… It was awesome. It was really cool. But you know, I don’t get to decide.”
Eisen then pressed Driver on whether he’d return if someone were to “resurrect” the project. “If they wanted to, fine. But we’re not… It’s not our call,” said Driver. “I think the ship has sailed though.” Driver did acknowledge the “fans response” to the dropped film, which he described as “pretty incredible.” I didn’t expect that it was going to be billboards and people flying planes over Disney and things like that. That was pretty cool.”

I have a feeling this was a mistake by Disney, but then I have not read the script, so who knows?
With Solo’s death the Skywalker line has ended, so one would imagine whatever the plot of Episodes X-XII, they won’t have a Skywalker in them, unless you count Rey. I guess time will tell, but if there’s no sign of Solo’s return in the script for Episode X, then I think we can rule out Driver’s return. The fact he seems keen to retu isrn rather disappointing, but perhaps it will be for the best?
