Mark Hamill has opinions about things. No surprise there. Everyone has opinions about things. More recently, Hamill opened up about his disagreeing with the direction of the story in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In his eyes, it would have been more rewarding if Luke had actually said stuff, and if he had had an integral role in the third act of the film.

It turns out that The Force Awakens isn’t the only movie he has strong opinions about. It also turns out that the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi has a lot of stuff that Hamill wasn’t too happy with — namely the stuff having to do with his character.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Hamill opened up about those issues.

“I at one point had to say to [director Rian Johnson], ‘I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character. Now, having said that, I have gotten it off my chest, and my job now is to take what you’ve created and do my best to realize your vision.’”

It’s also important to note that Hamill doesn’t consider himself the arbiter of good taste. It’s not that he thinks he’s the only one who has good ideas, but as an actor, he doesn’t like to at least be heard…even when his ideas aren’t so hot.

“I have thousands of really terrible ideas I would love to share with you, among which you might—just law of averages—find a nugget of something and go, ‘That’s not as terrible as the other 35 you just told us.’”

Is this a reason to be worried? No. Hamill was ultimately pleased with how The Force Awakens turned out, and his apparently also pleased with how The Last Jedi has also turned out. And despite his grievances with the former film, it turned out pretty well for all involved. As such, we can’t assume that his “lost” ideas would have turned out better than what ultimately makes it to the big screen. We’d like to think that Johnson went for what he felt was the stronger the direction, and his track record is pretty solid thus far.
