This coming weekend will see the release of the long-awaited Mummy reboot. While audiences have been anxious to see yet another interpretation of this beloved character, there’s definitely an added weight to the film in that it’s not just a way to kick off a franchise, but a way to kick off an entire universe of Universal’s iconic monsters. This universe is known as the Dark Universe, and in the announcement from Universal a few weeks back, it was confirmed that Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem would be joining as The Invisible Man and Frankenstein’s monster, respectively. However, apart from Bride of Frankenstein, what other films were they planning on making?
Speaking with Fandom, The Mummy director and producer Alex Kurtzman revealed a list of films they’d planned on doing.
“We know we’re going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man.”
For us, the clear standout is Hunchback of Notre Dame. When one thinks of all of Universal’s monsters, Quasimodo really isn’t one of the guys that comes to mind. Regardless, it is a gothic tale that could be told in the vein of some of the classics, so that’s not to say it can’t work if executed well. Another standout is Dracula. While it’s long been assumed that they’d be nixing the recent Dracula Untold from this universe, this seems to be the final nail in the proverbial coffin.

This wasn’t all Kurtzman had to say. In addition to the above list of films, he also threw out a bit of a wish list of which actors he wanted to see.
“I’d love to bring Michael Fassbender in, I’d love to bring Jennifer Lawrence in, I’d love to see Charlize Theron in there, Angelina Jolie…”
That’s quite the list there, and for the most part, it seems pretty attainable for them, assuming this first film is a success. Jolie would make an excellent Bride, and all of the other actors could easily find their places in this bigger universe. The only potential dud there is Lawrence — not because she’s bad, but because she seems the most uninterested in pursuing these big roles after her extended stint as Mystique in the X-Men films.
What do you think of all this? Is it encouraging to see this peek behind the curtain, or is this another case of a producer counting his eggs before they hatch? Let us know your thoughts down below!
