Looks like Mattel has been paying attention to what Hasbro has done with its Transformers and G.I. Joe toys- turning them into multi-million dollar movie franchises- and it wants a piece of the pie. We all ready know that they’re trying to get a new adaptation of Masters of The Universe off the ground, featuring He-Man and his friends, but now they’re also trying to get something going with their Max Steel character. After an ambitious relaunch in 2013, turning the toy into a multi-platform brand with games, merchandise, and publishing, they got the ball rolling on a feature film. They hired Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World) to write it, and they’ve got Stewart Hendler in the director’s chair. Now word has come out that they’ve landed Andy Garcia.

Variety is reporting that the veteran Cuban actor has been tapped to play a scientist in the film- which will star Ben Winchell and Ana Villafane. The sci-fi premise of the film is that teenager Max McGrath teams up with an alien companion named Steel. They find a way to combine their “special turbo-energy powers” and become Max Steel. It’s possible Garcia is going to play the scientist that helps them unite their abilities, playing the mentor type role that Stanley Tucci played in the first Captain America movie.

Shooting is set to begin next Tuesday in North Carolina, and the movie will be released in 2015.
