It should be no surprise to hear that there were story changes during the development process of a film. Writing, on any level, is pretty much an iterative process. You outline, you write, you rewrite, and rewrite, and rewrite, and often times, you’re rewriting all the way through the editing process.
Sometimes there’s a character who dies in draft one, and somehow cheats death atsome point along the way. It happened with Poe Dameron in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens — he was originally supposed to die in that TIE fighter crash at the start of the film — and even before that, there was apparently a character that wasn’t supposed to survive to the closing credits of her respective film. I’m talking about Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy.
At the end of the finished film, Nebula hijacks a spaceship and takes off, far away from the final battle in the movie. Speaking with Digital Spy, actress Karen Gillan revealed why there was no way for her to expect the arc of her character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
“I definitely had a feeling that there was room for the character to expand in the future, but she was originally supposed to die in the first movie, I think I remember in the script.
“She obviously did not die, then I found out that she was coming back in the second movie and then I found out we got to explore all these amazing things about her past and her relationship with Gamora, her sister, so I was really happy.”
This comes as a bit of a surprise. In the Infinity Gauntlet comic, Nebula plays kind of an important role, so nixing her from the story would have been a bit odd — that being said, we doubt she’ll actually be utilized in the same way for Avengers: Infinity War. Regardless, it seems like her and Gamora have some real bitterness to get over in this next film, so we’re happy they’ll get a chance to resolve that issue.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
