During the entire marketing campaign of Logan, one of my pet peeves was the constant use of black-and-white photos. This trend continued even after we saw our first actual photos from the film, and it seemed like minor mis-marketing. Why tease us with a black-and-white version of the film when we know for a fact that the film ISN’T black-and-white?
It turns out the advertising wasn’t all for nought. While the standard theatrical release of the movie was indeed in color, super hardcore fans should start lining up now, as a black-and-white version is on the way. Logan director James Mangold took to Twitter to announce said plans.
Suggestion. Hard core B&Wloving LOGAN fans should not make any plans on the evening of May 16th.

I have mixed feelings about the idea of using black-and-white in film. Not long ago, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road also got the black-and-white treatment, and while there were some positive aspects to that edition, it was all too clear that the film was not optimized for the color scheme. All in all, while a cool novelty, it wouldn’t consider it the best experience for the film.
This is a concern I have for Logan. Yes, some of the visuals are pretty cool, but there are a lot of dark shots in the film. Is it something that could be properly captured in black-and-white? That remains to be seen. Now, if Mangold had actually planned for this to be a black-and-white film, I’d be all on board with it, but making something black-and-white after the fact is the equivalent of converting to 3D after the fact (not the best example, but you get the idea).
