In the next month, Tom Cruise’s latest film, The Mummy will be hitting theaters across North America. It will be the latest iteration of the beloved Universal monster. Audiences were first introduced to the character of the Mummy back in the 1930s classic. Many folks in my generation, however, were exposed to the character in the 1999 reboot starring Brendan Fraser. But after that world was muddled with the two sequels, it was time for a change.

With this latest take on the classic monster, Universal will be kicking off a shared universe of iconic baddies that consist of Dracula, the Invisible Man, Mr. Hyde, and many others. This is the era of film that we live in, and given that we already have the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Extended Universe, and the Kong-Godzilla MonsterVerse all on the big screen at various stages, you’d be forgiven for being a bit doubtful of entering yet another.

However, if we’re to believe all we’ve heard, the filmmakers are very much focused on making this as good a film as it needs to be, rather than shoehorning in other monsters and building towards that bigger universe. They realize that in order for this to work, the Mummy has to work. Initially, it seemed to us that Princess Ahmanet, the Mummy in question, was kind of a crazed psychopath who was lockedaway due to her murderous tendencies, but now, thanks to a new featurette, we know there is more to hear than we initially thought.

It turns out that she was promised a throne, and was subsequently betrayed when it was all taken away from her. Thus far in all the marketing, we’ve only seen her in one form, with actress Sofia Boutella wrapped up in standard mummy wraps. However, like other Mummy films, the Mummy herself will have various stages of transormation.

Starting off as nothing but bone and wraps, she gains her muscle mass and skin as she feeds. This is very much in keeping with previous iterations of the Mummy, and it’s nice to see that they’ll be keeping that tradition alive. I only hope that when we see it all come together on the big screen that it doesn’t come across as boring or repetitive to see her go through her typical “feeding” process. That being said, it’s been nearly 20 years since we’ve last seen that play a crucial part in the films, so it’s not as though it happens every couple years.
