The Navy SEALs proved their military might by eliminating real life terrorist Bin Laden last year and now by leaving no survivors at the weekend box office.
Military action film “Act of Valor†took the top position in this weekend’s theater box office with $24.7 million in 3,039 locations. The film starred a group of active duty Navy SEALs that heavily featured modern warfare techniques.
The film was about an elite team of Navy SEALs in an operation to rescue a kidnapped CIA agent. The most well-known star in the film was actress Roselyn Sanchez (“Rush Hour 2â€). “Act of Valor†film budget was $12 million.
Lionsgate’s “Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds†premiered in second place with $16 million at fewer locations of 2,132 theaters.
According to Box Office Mojo, it was the second-worst debut for Tyler Perry and it did not feature his most popular comedic character Madea.
The drama focused on a businessman who meets a poor cleaning lady in his office building. The film also starred Thandie Newton, Gabrielle Union, Jamie Kennedy, and Rebecca Romijn.
In rounding out the top five, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island†fell to third place with $13.475 million, a decrease of 32.1 percent. Last weekend’s box office king “Safe House,†dropped to fourth place with $11.4 million, a drop of 51.8 percent. And in fifth place, “The Vow†garnered $10 million, a decrease of $56.6 million.
Universal Pictures’ “Wanderlust†bombed hard at the box office with $6.6 million. It was one of the worst openings for actress Jennifer Aniston, which was lower than 2010’s “The Switch†and 2009’s “Love Happens.â€
The film also starred Paul Rudd about an unemployed couple decided to live at free love rural commune.
And Summit Entertainment’s “Gone†basically disappeared from the box office with $5 million in its weekend premiere. The film starred Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Carpenter about a young woman convinced that her sister was kidnapped by a serial killer.
For next weekend, the animated film “Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax†and the comedy “Project X†will make their debut in the theater.
