Ever since Ronda Rousey stepped into the Octogan and took the world by storm, Female MMA has gone to a whole new level. Everyone from UFC to Hollywood is trying to cash in on this new wave of female athletes. Female Fight Squad is the latest attempt from Hollywood to capitalize on the swelling popularity of Women’s MMA. Starring martial artist, and stunt performer, Amy Johnston as the main lead, Rebecca, in a prototypical fight movie. A retired fighter must get back into the ring to save a loved one from a debt they owe. As any good throwback fighting movie it is only natural to cast an actor from the 80’s or 90’s. Dolph Lundgren is that actor who stars in this movie, and doesn’t overshadow the story at all. The plot of the movie is nothing we haven’t already seen from any MMA/fighting movie. A former fighter, Rebecca (Amy Johnston), reluctantly returns to the life she abandoned in order to help her sister survive the sadistic world of illegal fighting and the maniac who runs it. Where this movie shines are in its fight scenes, choreographed by Malay Kim, Johnny Yang and Tanay Genco Ulgen. This movie didn’t try to hide its fight scenes with quick camera movement, or speeding up the film to make the fighters seem faster than they really are. For those who watch this film and aren’t accustomed to watching MMA these fights may seem really slow compared to what you normally see in a Hollywood film. While there were times during some of the fights that I knew weren’t authenticate, a majority of the fighting scenes kept my attention and praise. You may not know who Amy Johnston is as an actress, but you know her stunt work from Suicide Squad, Deadpool, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier among many other credits she has as a stunt performer. Johnston brought an authenticity to this movie with her extensive background in martial arts. The rest of the cast does their best to make something original with a story that has been done many times before. Where the cast shines are the fight scenes trying to make them as authentic as possible. Overall, Female Fight Squad is exactly what you think it is, but fans of Women’s MMA will appreciate this movie. While the story has some flaws the fight scenes make up for it. If you are a fan of the fighting genre then you should pick up this movie.
