Charlie Cox was little-known British actor in 2011, working his craft in various BBC TV series and short films, when he landed his breakthrough role in HBO’s historical crime-drama Boardwalk Empire. However, it would be five more years before he was cast as Matt Murdock in Marvel and Netflix’s first big superhero series: Daredevil, which begins production for its third season in October.
Daredevil became one of Netflix’s biggest hits, and led the way for future Marvel series like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and soon The Punisher. Cox is in the unique position of having watched each of these Marvel series constructed from the ground-up, observing fan and media buzz, and participating in a full-blown pop-culture phenomenon. So, where does Daredevil go from here?

Following the events of The Defenders (no spoilers), there remains big questions about the upcoming third season of Daredevil, such as the status of Wilson Fisk, Elektra, and his relationships with Foggy and Karen. Collider conducted an interview with Cox to get his perspective and insight about the future of Matt Murdock. Cox explains his initial shock and surprise of landing the role of Daredevil:
“When I was in my 20s and I was an actor in London, I’d come out to Los Angeles and try to get work. Some of my dear friends, who were all trying to look for jobs, ended up being superheroes. I was mates with Andrew Garfield, Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill, and a ton of these guys who all ended up becoming these superheroes. When I hit 30, I thought, “Well, that ship has sailed, and I won’t get that opportunity.”
The Defenders forced Matt to embrace and trust teammates:
“One of the great learning curves for him is that there are people out there where what they have to offer is very valid and beneficial. It’s also nice, emotionally, for him to learn to work as a team and start trusting in other people, not only in their abilities, but in who they are as other people and in their reliability as friends.”
Cox describes Daredevil’s new connection with Jessica, Luke, and Danny by the end of The Defenders:
“For me, the most interesting part of this story is the relationship between these guys and what it means for them to meet each other, share that bond, and work together to overcome this great evil, in a very short period of time. The fun of it for the fans is to see these characters evolve, and to grow and learn from each other.”
What does Cox expect in Daredevil Season 3:
“I don’t know what they’re thinking or planning for Season 3. I’d like to see the relationship with Karen figure itself out. I’d like Matt to be able to find that vulnerability that is required, in order to be honest, up front and vulnerable with someone that he cares greatly about. Hopefully, he’s learned some lessons from The Defenders. Hopefully, he’s learned that sometimes we need each other… and he doesn’t have to be so stubborn in his need and desire to do everything by himself.”
Cox recently commented to THR are rumors that Daredevil Season 3 will adapt the classic Frank Miller tale “Born Again,” which once again pits Murdock against Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin, but so far there’s been no confirmation from Marvel regarding this storyline. The end of The Defenders ever so subtly plants these seeds, however. Cox relates:
“Everyone who loves Daredevil loves Born Again… Having said that, I know we don’t tend to follow any story blueprints too closely, because if you do, then you become a foregone conclusion. There may be elements from Born Again, but I’m sure there will be elements that are unfamiliar and surprising and different in order for the show to be compelling to fans who know the comics very well.”
The great news for Marvel fans is that we’re only getting started with these street-level heroes. The Punisher will probably drop on Nov 10-11 (coincides with Veteran’s Day and the Marine Corps Anniversary), while Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones are each rolling into their next seasons too. We’re now in a world where another Marvel series hits Netflix every 3-4 months (and big questions about new characters like Moon Knight too). Stay tuned everyone!
