It looks like Danny Boyle may not be directing the next James Bond film, after all. According to THR, the Slumdog Millionaire helmer is teaming up with Love Actually writer-director Richard Curtis for an untitled comedy.
This is set to be Boyle’s next film, with Curtis tackling writer duties. Specific details are under wraps, but what is known is that it will be a musically-themed film set in either the 1960s or 1970s, and the film could be shooting as early as this summer, provided casting comes together. If things are happening that quickly, I can only imagine that the script is either done or pretty far along.

So what does this mean for Bond 25? It sounds like EON Productions has a tough decision to make. If they want to lock down Boyle, they’ll have to wait and probably even push back the November 8, 2019 release date. Their other option is to jump head-first into another director search, meaning that they’d likely revert to the non-Boyle-skewed script they’d already developed in-house.
We’ll be interested to see what comes of both of these projects, but given how quickly it seems Boyle was ready to jump into this project, it’s likely in EON’s best interest to find a filmmaker who’s more ready to drop everything and go all-in on Bond.
