Well, folks, it looks like we may not have seen the last of the “Saw” franchise. Despite it being three years since the seventh (yes, SEVENTH) film in the series was released, the decision-makers at Lionsgate are said to be pursuing ways to continue the franchise. According to Bloody-Disgusting, the studio is actively working on an eighth “Saw” movie.
To their credit, they’re apparently not rushing it. The studio is waiting to find the perfect “take” on how to relaunch the series that was a perennial Halloween mainstay from 2004 through 2010. The movies were a big success for Lionsgate due to the low budget nature of the films, which created very attractive profit margins. The “Paranormal” franchise stepped in with a similar formula and has also reaped great rewards.
As of now, nothing is known about the project other than that it’s being looked into. There’s no word on if James Wan or Leigh Whannel, the creators, will be involved. Likewise, there’s no casting news to report either, since the direction of the film is still up in the air.
So that begs the question: What would it take for YOU to return to a theater to see a “Saw” movie? Would you want a continuation of the original story? Would you want it to sort of reboot itself by creating a new antagonist with similar tastes as Jigsaw and not referencing the previous films much? Or are you just done, and there’s nothing that would make you pay money to see another “Saw” movie?
