Studio Signs DeMonaco For More “Purge”

thepurge“The Purge,” which made $87 million on a budget of $3 million earlier this year, will get a sequel. Variety is reporting James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the first film, has signed on. Below is the basic premise for the first, and probably the series, direct from Universal Pictures, for those of you that didn’t see it:

“In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity-including murder-becomes legal. The police can’t be called. Hospitals suspend help. It’s one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment.”

So, it would stand to reason that a different “Purge” film can be made every year, following a different set of main characters- thanks to flexibility of the premise. If this becomes the case, between the “Paranormal” franchise and the reports yesterday that “Saw” may be returning, we may have a trifecta of annual horror releases.

Blumhouse, Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, and Sebastien Lemercier are all returning to produce the sequel. A release date has not yet been announced.
