UPDATE: Director Bryan Singer has responded to the reports of “reshoots” via twitter. He has clarified that these aren’t reshoots, contrary to how Montreal film commissioner Hans Fraikin characterized the work. They are pick-ups, which are “when you grab additional shots & beats,” as opposed to reshoots, which are “when stuff didn’t come out right so you have to reshoot it.”

So, as suggested in the original article, these extra weeks of shooting are, indeed, to add extra content to the hotly-anticipated feature.

In a move that’s become more and more common over the years for large scale blockbusters, Bryan Singer and Co. are heading back to Canada for a round of reshoots. While no official reason has been cited for the reshoots, there’sreally nothing to be concerned about here. With films on this epic scale, with hundreds of millions of dollars invested, it’s become customary for the studios to want to add tweaks or extra sequences to make sure that the film is as successful as possible.

However, being that this is a geek property, there’s plenty of speculation going around about what these reshoots are for. I’ve heard murmurs of everything from it being to shoot a post-credit sequence that would tie into the possible next Wolverine film, to add more apocalyptic future scenes, or to give Halle Berry more to do now that she gave birth on October 5th and can handle some action shoots.

What we do know for certain is that it won’t just be a day or two of work. Quebec film commissioner Hans Fraikin has referred to it as “a few weeks.” On whether anyone should be worried about this, he added, “Not at all. It happens all the time, especially with big pictures.” Just to put into perspective how “big” this picture is, though, here’s a morsel for you to chew on: This is the second most expensive film 20th Century Fox has ever produced. What is it second to? “Avatar.” So it makes perfect sense that they’re going to be tinkering with this one until they think it has its greatest shot at success.
