Despite ‘Lone Ranger’ Disney Has Record Year Thanks To Marvel & Monsters

loneranger-newfeatureBusiness is booming for Disney, and the behemoth just continues to get bigger. The mouse house has earned $3.79 billion globally so far this year, with a couple of holiday weekends still to come to round things out. That’s a record figure for the company, and it comes on the heels of one of their biggest bombs in recent memory, The Lone Ranger. When all was said and done, that flop was said to set Disney back between $160 million and $190 million.

What powered this monstrous year for the company that turned 90 on October 16? Superheroes and ‘Monsters,’ of course. With Iron Man 3, Disney houses the year’s top earner. IM3 scored a berserk $1.2 billion globally, and then Thor: The Dark World pitched in another $620+ million intoDisney’s Marvel account. Add into the mix Pixar’s sequel Monsters University and the current animated smash Frozen, and it’s easy to see why Disney is breaking records. Last but not least, we can’t forget about how their year started- Oz The Great And Powerful, got the ball rolling in 2013 with nearly $500 million.

Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn had this to say on the year that was: “We had an incredible collection of films in 2013 and our teams here and around the world worked very hard to bring these wonderful experiences to audiences. As a result we are having a banner year at the domestic, international and global box office.

With the quasi-recent acquisition of LucasFilm, which gives them the keys to Star Wars and- with a little extra leg work- Indiana Jones, it’s clear that the coming years are going to make Disney the company to beat.
