waltermitty20th Century Fox has released a new six minute trailer for its upcoming feel good action-dramedy, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

“A day-dreamer escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, he takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.”

The film is based on a short story by James Thurber, written back in 1942. This is the second film adaptation of the story, with the first being a 1947 Danny Kaye vehicle with the same name. This current adaptation has been in development for some time. At one stage, Jim Carrey would’ve played the title role.

It looks like a film that could be a surprise Oscar contender, with its heartfelt, emotional tone and uplifting message. If it’s able to live up to the promise of its trailers, this has the trappings of a really special picture. It’s definitely on my list.

Ben Stiller is not only the star, but also the director. This would mark his first big screen directing effort since 2008’s raucous Tropic Thunder. Kristen Wiig, Shirley McClaine, Sean Penn, and Adam Scott round out the cast.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty comes to life in theaters on Christmas day, later this month.
