Well, my sister-in-law will be ecstatic. A sequel to Pitch Perfect, the 2012 comedy hit about a college glee club, is officially in development. This should come as no surprise, as the original cost a mere $17 million to make, and raked in a worldwide cume of just over $113 million. What might surprise you is who they have lined up in the director’s chair. Actress Elizabeth Banks will be making her feature directorial debut with this one.
Then again, she did produce and co-star in the last one, and is also credited with conceiving the idea for it. Somaybe it’s not such a stretch that this would be the right fit for her debut directing gig.
“Elizabeth originated the idea for Pitch Perfect and was instrumental in making the first film such a huge success,†said Donna Langley, the chairman of Universal Pictures. “She brings an enormous amount of energy and experience to everything she works on and we’re thrilled that she is making her feature directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2.”
Kay Cannon, who wrote the first film, and has a resumé stacked with female-driven comedies like 30 Rock, and The New Girl, is writing the sequel. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are also said to be returning for another go-around. You may recall that Kendrick scored a hit single off of Pitch Perfect‘s nearly triple platinum-selling soundtrack, with the song “When I’m Gone (The Cup Song).”
