‘Ghostbusters III’ To Be Reworked After Passing of Ramis

ghostbusters-original1With the sad news from a few days ago, that Egon had crossed the streams for the final time, a few people wondered what this meant for the forever-in-development Ghostbusters III. It looks like we now have our answer: Not much.

The script, written by The Office scribes Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, was said to feature Harold Ramis’s Egon, as well as the other original Ghostbusters, in what would amount to an extended cameo. The characters would appear in mentor roles, in such a way that they would pass the baton, or proton packs, to a new generation of Ghostbusters.

So while his untimely passing will have some repercussions on the project, an insider has told THR that it will have a minimal effect on the script. They did add, though, that his work in an advisory role will be sorely missed. Ramis had co-written the first two films in the series, and was well-respected as a comedy guru within Hollywood. “He was always great to bounce something off of, and that will certainly be missed,” said THR’s unnamed source.

The film, though, is still a ways off. It’s had a series of stops and starts in the last 25 years, but this latest script was said to have finally gotten the ball rolling on the production. But even with that, the project wasn’t likely to begin filming until next year. It would appear that Hollywood’s hunger to make a third Ghostbusters film has died down since the franchise was at its zenith in the 80s, though it’s possible that the passing of Ramis could- ironically- be a boon to the production. With the outpouring of love, support, and nostalgia since he passed away on Monday, the decision-makers may have found a renewed spark for it.

We shall see.
