A New Star Wars Comic Era Begins: “The Battle of Jakku”

Director Shawn Levy says his Star Wars movie is designed as a standalone experience.

This October, Star Wars fans will embark on an epic new journey as the Star Wars comic universe expands with Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku. This series, penned by the acclaimed and award-winning author Alex Segura, known for Star Wars: Poe Dameron – Free Fall and Edge of Spider-Verse, brings a new depth to the Star Wars lore. The series will feature stunning artwork by a powerhouse team of artists, including Leonard Kirk, Stefano Raffaele, Jethro Morales, and Luke Ross.

Set in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi, The Battle of Jakku will unfold across three limited series: Insurgency Rising, Republic Under Siege, and Last Stand. These series will chronicle the final, desperate moments of the Galactic Civil War, providing fans with a front-row seat to the pivotal Battle of Jakku, a critical event that was first introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Rey scavenged among its wreckage.

The Battle of Jakku marks a significant turning point in the galaxy’s history, as the scattered remnants of the Empire make their last stand against the determined forces of the Rebellion. With their secret base on Jakku discovered, the Empire’s forces find themselves on the defensive, facing annihilation as the New Republic seeks to secure its hard-won victory and ensure peace across the galaxy.

Segura, reflecting on the importance of the series, expressed his excitement about exploring this critical chapter in Star Wars history. “It’s an unbelievable honor to be able to tell this lost story of Star Wars history, alongside so many amazing artists, in the pages of the three Battle of Jakku limited series,” Segura said. “Our story will be epic in scope – involving all the major characters you love, plus some new, exciting additions to the mythos. We’ll not only give readers a front-row seat to the final battle of the Galactic Civil War – we’ll reframe the aftermath of the Battle of Endor and introduce a new, menacing threat that will keep our heroes guessing.”

The series will feature beloved characters like Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa while also introducing new heroes and villains who played crucial roles during this tumultuous period. These new narratives will bridge the gap between the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy in a way that has never been done before, revealing key insights into the aftermath of the Battle of Endor and the eventual collapse of the Empire. Fans can also expect to uncover details about Emperor Palpatine’s secret contingency plans and the rise of power-hungry factions during this era of uncertainty.

Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku promises to stand as a monumental addition to Star Wars canon, offering a fresh perspective on a story that has long been shrouded in mystery. The first issue of Insurgency Rising is now available for pre-order at local comic shops, and fans are encouraged to secure their copies to experience this thrilling new saga firsthand.
