Abrams Producing New Star Trek Movie In Kelvin Timeline

EW Reports J.J. Abrams producing new Star Trek movie in the Kelvin Timeline. For those that don’t know, that means effectively this is Star Trek 4, and will be a sequel to Star Trek Beyond. According to the outlet:

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg and the rest of the reboot timeline crew in talks to return.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”

Since Star Trek Beyond things went really quiet on the Star Trek movie front, but pushed full steam ahead on streaming. I’ve personally always felt the franchise was at it’s best on TV and not the movie theaters outside of a few exceptions. So far I enjoyed Star Trek, but really didn’t care for either Into Darkness nor Beyond. Long time readers of this site also probably know my thoughts on J.J. Abrams. Therefore I guess I am not the kind of person Paramount will be targeting with this new movie?

I prefer my Trek in the main timeline, but if it gets good word of mouth, I may give it a shot? One thing the writers will have to work out is how to proceed without the Chekov character. As I’m sure you’re aware, actor Anton Yelchin died tragically too young before Star Trek Beyond premiered.
