Dan Houser, the creative mastermind behind some of gaming’s most iconic and subversive stories, is stepping into the world of comics with a bold new vision. Houser, best known as the co-founder of Rockstar Games and the head writer behind legendary franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, is launching American Caper, his first original comic series, through his new transmedia company, Absurd Ventures.
Teaming up with Dark Horse Comics, American Caper is a 12-issue crime fiction saga set to debut this fall. Described as a darkly satirical tale rooted in the fractured landscape of modern America, the series brings Houser’s signature flair for morally complex characters and biting social commentary to the page.
The story centers on two neighboring families navigating a world fueled by corrupt business, broken politics, and designer criminality. Houser’s America is one where capitalism wears sweatpants and vengeance is just another lifestyle choice. Among the series’ standout cast are a Mormon hitman, a gambling-addicted lawyer, a billionaire-turned-cowboy, a beauty queen on the run, and a man whose thirst for revenge burns through every panel.

Joining Houser on American Caper is longtime collaborator Lazlow Jones—another Grand Theft Auto veteran—who is producing the series and contributing additional writing. Eisner Award-winning artist David Lapham (Stray Bullets) leads the visual storytelling, with finishes by Chris Anderson (Creepshow), coloring by Lee Loughridge (G.I. Joe), and lettering by Nate Piekos (The Umbrella Academy: Plan B).
With American Caper, Absurd Ventures is planting a flag in the world of comics, promising fans of gritty, satirical crime fiction—and fans of Houser’s past work—a story that’s as explosive and unforgettable as anything he’s ever written.
