A couple of days ago, star of Disney’s live-action Aladdin film Mena Massoud, who played the lead character, Aladdin, had not been able to capitalize on the success of the film that had grossed over $1 billion dollars worldwide. The story goes that he has not been given a single audition since then. What is interesting is that there is another one of his co-stars that will unexpectedly be getting his own spin-off from Aladdin.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has brought in Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme to write a script for an Aladdin spin-off series that is centered on Prince Anders, played by Billy Magnussen. This was the overdressed and not so bright prince from the fictional kingdom named Skanland, who was presented as a possible suitor to Princess Jasmine. His character was an original creation for the live action-film.
This is the first of the live-action Disney films to begin to develop a spin-off. Dunn and Kvamme have several comedy projects in the works like Operation Prince of Freedom at Fox and an esports project over at Legendary that has Will Ferrell attached to star. As for Magnussen, we will see him in next years’ No Time To Die film.
Magnussen would reprise his role in the Disney+ feature and the producers of Aladdin, Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, via their Rideback banner will produce. Also from Rideback, Ryan Halprin will executive produce. Magnussen has been involved with the idea of the project, coming to producers with story ideas as well as meeting with potential writers with them.
Not the series I was expecting for Disney+, but since I am already going to be paying for it, why not? Are you interested in a Prince Anders series? Let us know in the comment section below!
