Aladdin To Crush The Competition This Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is nearly upon us, and with it comes another big movie in the form of Disney’s Aladdin. Of course, this movie is the latest in a long line of live-action adaptations from animated classics, and as good of a track record Disney has on these things, there is a lot of doubt going in. Between the look of the Genie, the wonky visual effects, and the seemingly lackluster musical numbers, many wondered if this would end up as a blunder for the House of Mouse.

Well, it looks like it may not be such a blunder, after all. According to Variety, the film is expected to take in between $75 million and $85 million over the course of the Memorial Day weekend. It’s quite the step down from the $103 million The Jungle Book took in in its opening weekend and the mammoth $174 million Beauty and the Beast took in in its first three days, but it is a huge step up from the $45 million Dumbo opened with a couple months ago.

Jeff Bock, Exhibitor Relations media analyst is quick to point out that this doesn’t necessarily have to be a gigantic hit for Disney, and in fact, they’re not really looking to accomplish that.

“Disney isn’t looking for a home run. That’s coming with The Lion King. Disney is in a good place, where [Aladdin] doesn’t have to be a massive success to make their summer.”

Of course, it will also depend on how well received the movie will be. As of this writing, it’s sitting at a “Rotten” 55%, with 84 reviews counted. All in all, it sounds like fans of the original will be pleased, but that it’s not nearly as vibrant or inspired as fans would like it to be. I will say, to its credit, there does seem to be quite the critical divide. While the negative reviews are pretty negative, the positive ones are pretty enthusiastic as a whole, which may ultimately be more in line with what moviegoing fans will feel when the movie hits.

Our own Fox Troilo had a chance to check out the movie, and you can check it out HERE and decide for yourselves if it’s worth your time and money. I know my ass is already in the seat though.
