Aladdin: Will Smith And Guy Ritchie React To Genie Backlash

It’s 2019 and we still occasionally get movies that don’t look nearly as well as we expect them to. This year alone had two such incidents…and both also happened to be blue, so apparently, this isn’t the year for blue lovers. of course, I’m talking about the more recent Sonic the Hedgehog and the introduction of the blue Genie in the upcoming Disney live-action remake, Aladdin.

Personally, from the get-go, Aladdin seemed troubled. The visual effects looked overly-fake, and it also looked like it wasn’t really making an effort to do anything other than retell the original story beat for beat. But then we got blue Will Smith, and the short clip launched ten million memes. The backlash was so bad Disney had to release the Frozen 2 trailer to cover it up (though they probably already had it planned, but we can ignore that).

So how did the talent feel about the backlash? Speaking with Empire, star Will Smith, who portrays the Genie, didn’t seem to be bothered too much.

“It was very funny. There was a Sonic The Hedgehog / Genie frog. Everything is under such critical scrutiny. I came up in an era where there was no internet. It’s a new thing that I’m trying to get a handle on.”

Guy Ritchie, the film’s director, didn’t share his thoughts on his response after the first trailer, but when that second one hit and fans seemed to be back on board (this fan included), he was encouraged.

“It even came with apologies from the cynics who were so adamant initially. I’ve never seen apologies in that world. I thought, ‘Oh well, great, we’re back to where I’d hoped we’d be.’”

He’s not wrong. That being said, the “Prince Ali” clip released last week didn’t really inspire much confidence. But, the backbone of the original film is so good that it’d be hard to screw up, even if the dance numbers aren’t too exciting.
