This morning, EW released several images of the upcoming Disney live-action film Aladdin. Of course, the images included the likes of Aladdin himself and Jasmine, but the main character audiences were undoubtedly anxious to take a gander at was Will Smith’s Genie.
Genie was a character popularized in the original 1990s film by the late and great Robin Williams, who imbued him with his own sense of comedy — a sense of comedy that the generation of kids really took to heart. The images shown weren’t bad, showing Smith in colorful apparel. Personally, I think it worked well, but I’m sure some of you were a tad concerned by the absence of one thing: blue. Yep, as we all know, the Genie has always been blue in the film. So would that aspect of the character be lost?
Not according to Smith, who, while sharing the cover, assured fans he would be blue.

This is backed up by director Guy Ritchie, who stated that the effects done with Will Smith in his blue lamp form aren’t done yet — so that aspect will be retained.
Personally, I can’t say I care much either way. Given that this is a live-action adaptation, I would have been totally cool with them keeping a more human form of the Genie, without having the need to mimic the blue lamp form in the original film.
That being said, them making the extra effort to give us the best of both worlds really doesn’t bother me either. But what do you think? Do you care whether or not the Genie is blue? Let us know down below!
