The reviews are out for Alien: Romulus and the Rotten Tomatoes score indicates this is the best in the franchise since Aliens. Not every reviewer is in love with the film 100%, though a few are very positive. There are also some criticisms, it seems many reviewers felt the third act let the film down. No spoilers have come out yet, but it appears that third act has some moments in it which take the franchise in new directions. Not everyone seems to think it worked.
The positives seems to be, the use of practical effects where possible and the aesthetic/atmosphere. Many liken it to what Ridley Scott chose for the original Alien. Yet we also know this movies has some elements of Aliens as well. They have guns for one.
Additionally, whilst most of the cast are expendable, the two main characters get plenty of praise. Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonnson) it seems most reviewers enjoyed. The rest, not so much, but then again, we do really need to have some red shirts in this kind of film.

As for common criticisms? There seems to be a fair bit of nostalgia in this one, which is the current trend in Hollywood. I’ve heard some of this makes no sense being set prior to Aliens. Like, there are lines ripped straight from that sequel used here. Some reviewers of course thought it was too much. Others liked the nostalgia trip, maybe depends what you thought of other nostalgia filled movies?
Then there’s that third act which some liked and some did not. I guess that part is going to be a little subjective. I won’t say too much about that, there are some hints around of what happens, but I think I’d rather wait and see myself.
Either way, the movie is now sitting at 83% positive on RT. That so far makes it the third highest rated Alien movie outside of the first two. That’s certainly so far sounding better than Alien: Covenant, which it seems most Alien fans just didn’t care for. I wasn’t keen either.
What do you think as the Alien: Romulus Rotten Tomatoes score indicates it’s the best in franchise since Aliens? Thoughts below as always.
