Alita: Battle Angel Will Have An Unexpected Actress As An Extra

This year will see countless big-budget extravaganzas hit the big screen, and while I’m looking forward to the vast majority of them, there is a special place in my heart for this year’s Alita: Battle Angel. Not only is it based on a manga — a medium that deserves better movies than it’s been getting — but it comes from Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron.

The film stars Rosa Salazar in the lead role as Alita, and as was very noticeable in that first trailer, she’s sporting some huge anime eyes, pushing her over into the uncanny valley. But does she look so different from the actress that plays her that we wouldn’t recognize her if she popped on screen with her normal face? We may very well get that chance.

In a short little clip from an interview with Salazar, the actress reveals that she talked her way into being an extra in the movie. So in addition to being the lead, she will also be visible as an extra at some point in the film (of course, assuming that shot doesn’t end up on the cutting room floor).

“I just wanna prove that I have range, you know?” Salazar said jokingly. “I can do it all.”

Once the movie comes out, that’s sure to be a fun piece of trivia for it — one so juicy that I can’t imagine Robert Rodriguez actually cutting it out. I’ll be keeping an eye on the background players the entire movie when I do see it.
