Jace and Rocky breakdown the October solicitations from DC Comics. With the release of these not only has DC confirmed the rumored creative teams for the new Absolute Universe, they have also revealed the new creative teams for many titles in the main line. Several titles will have the same creative teams returning and with few exceptions these seem to be the titles that are selling the best.

The titles which will maintain the same teams are:

Batman

Superman

Wonder Woman

Green Lantern

Flash

Poison Ivy

The titles with new teams include:

Action Comics

Detective Comics

Batman & Robin

Catwoman

Titans

Harley Quinn

Nightwing

Green Arrow

With these announcements it is clear that DC is, indeed, ALL IN on trying to revitalize a line that has been relatively well received critically over recent years, but as lagged in sales. It remains to be seen whether the excitement of this initiative can bring back lapsed readers, and more importantly, attract new fans.

The recent All In announcement on YouTube from Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson appears to have meet with mostly a positive reaction. More details about what’s to come starting in October will be revealed at the rapidly approaching San Deigo Comic Con.

Starting in 2011 with the official announcement of The New 52 DC has had an outsized presence at this mega-convention when it comes to comic publishers. No one spotlights as much there as DC and no one brings as many creators for signings and panels. It is safe to that will be the case this year as well.

We do have some interesting details about the initiative already directly from Scott Snyder. In two recent installments of his newsletter, Snyder talks about the impetus of All In coming from a sense of needing to push back on the idea that superheroes are over. That they have had their time but now they have become passé.

After discussing this with Williamson, the idea to have not just an event, but an initiative line-wide was first considered. In looking back at the most successful initiatives DC had done in the past, New 52 and Rebirth, they realized that one was hyper focused on the “new”, while the other focused the great DC legacy and history. The question then became how they could do both. The answer to the new is Absolute Universe, a way to reinvent familiar characters in “daring ways that are personal”. Meanwhile, the main universe will continue to focus on the more familiar versions of the characters and continue to build on the legacy of DC.

One of the other things we want to mention is just how long this has been in the works. The pre-planning took place over years and is reminiscent of what was done for the New 52. The post below is directly from Snyder’s newsletter wherein he makes an important point about how much DC has invested to make this work and ensure that everyone at DC is on the same page from top to bottom.

If you would like to read Snyder’s last two newsletters where he talks about All In. You can find them here https://bestjackettpress.substack.com/ They are definitely worth a read to provide more context about All In, especially in regard to Snyder’s reluctance to take on the writing duties for Absolute Batman. That hesitation to return to Batman may surprise some people, but makes perfect sense when you read Snyder’s thoughts.

There will be a lot more All In news to come from SDCC 2024. So be sure you are following the Comic Source on social media to stay informed.
