Guardians of the Galaxy is a franchise whose music is as a part of its DNA as the flamboyant colors that populate its settings. It’s an integral part of the narrative and the characters, and overall style of the films. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that so much hinges on the songs we’ll be getting in the next film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Well, it sounds like writer-director James Gunn is nearing the finish line — at least when it comes to picking these songs. The filmmaker took to Twitter to share his progress when he came across a tweet that said he’d narrowed it down to 181 songs.

So 10 songs have currently been selected, which means we are likely no more than two or three songs away from a complete soundtrack. We’re inferring this from the fact that the first Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack had 12 songs, and the second had 13, so he’s damn near closer to finishing things up for this superhero sequel. We can only assume that this process goes hand-in-hand with the writing of the script, so we wouldn’t be surprised if he was close to finishing up a draft of the script as well.

Sadly, we’re no closer to knowing what the actual soundtrack will entail, but Gunn guarantees that in over two years, we’ll know. We’ll hold him to that!
