Andor Showrunner Teases Cassian’s Arc And Ensemble Feel

Andor didn't use The Volume

Tony Gilroy, Andor showrunner teases Cassian’s arc in the show alongside how the show will still have an ensemble feel to it. Andor premiere’s on Disney+ this August 31st. Season 1 will consist of 12 episodes and that will be followed by a second 12-episode season due to start filming sometime later this year. Speaking with ComicBook, Gilroy teased Cassian’s arc from where we first meet him, to the man he is in Rogue One.

“We always that it would be interesting to take somebody who was so accomplished in Rogue One, who has so many skills. He’s obviously a leader and he’s a seducer and he’s capable of changing his mind. He’s creative and he’s also soulful and he’s gonna give himself for the galaxy. And it was like, well, if you’re gonna start five years earlier, what’s the longest possible journey he could make? So we put him in a big hole when we start. Five years earlier, he’s a very different man. So watching, you want to see people change.”

You definitely have to give the main character an arc. I think this is why Obi-Wan Kenobi starts with a rather disillusioned Kenobi, so that he can grow throughout the course of the story. However as Gilroy says, Andor is not just about Cassian Andor. Andor will have an ensemble feel to it, just like Rogue One.

“We’re introducing other people,” Gilroy said. “We’re carrying a lot of characters. We have a lot of real estate and so it’s a pretty big opportunity from a storytelling point of view.”

Finally, Gilroy spoke about the decision to split the story into two 12-episode Seasons.

“Originally we thought, oh, maybe we’ll do five seasons, but it’s just the scale of the show is I think when the show comes out, everybody will forgive us for not doing that. This is the show is huge and it’s just physically impossible. So then we were like, what are we going to do? And then the answer turned out to be incredibly elegant and perfect. Which is because we knew where we wanted to go. Every now and then you get really lucky and the solution turned out to be really fortunate for us.”

From the teaser trailer alone, I think I can say I agree the scale of this show seems big. We seem to be jumping across multiple characters across different planets. From what we have heard teased already by the creators, Genevieve O’Reilly seems to have a large role as Mon Mothma in Andor. We know Coruscant is definitely a location we will see more of in Andor which means potential politics and Sith Lords. .
