It looks like AMC’s long-running series The Walking Dead is about to undergo some real change in the very near future. According to a new report from Collider, Andrew Lincoln — who plays Rick Grimes in the series — will be exiting in Season 9.
Additionally, the outlet stated that AMC had expected to announce this exit ahead of his final episodes, though it’s currently unclear which episodes they will be (though word has it that he has roughly only six or so episodes left to his name). It also unknown what the circumstances will be surrounding his character’s departure, though all that they really know is he will be out before the finale of next season.
These past couple seasons have been brutal for the series, and this past season saw the departure of Chandler Riggs, who played Karl in the show. With Lincoln now taking his lead, that’s another big, long-lasting character who is meeting his end. So what is AMC going to do to help fill the void? Collider states that AMC is looking to up Norman Reedus’ pay to stay on board and to take over as the series’ lead.
With Lincoln’s departure, there will be virtually no more original cast members remaining — which I guess is to be expected in a real zombie apocalypse. The big question here is whether or not fans will now vacate the series en masse once this shift happens, realizing that absolutely no one will be getting a happy ending.
