The latest Rings of Power Barside Buzz says that that the angelic form of Sauron will appear in Season 2 played by a different actor. Season 1 of The Rings of Power saw Sauron played by Charlie Vickers, in what was a sort of Human form. However, as we know from the lore, Sauron is able to take many guises at this point in time.

When this show was first revealed, my excitement was seeing the Annatar form of Sauron from the lore. Therefore, I was fairly disappointed with Halbrand the dull. I also don’t think it made sense with the lore and world building, but I’ve written about that before. I actually like Charlie Vickers. Though, when Halbrand helps Celembrimbor create the Three, before any other Rings, I did roll my eyes. Mainly, because I thought we had lost the chance to see Annatar the Lord of Gifts. However, a new leak from FOF, who has a very good hit rate for this show, suggests I may get my wish.

Here is what the outlet had to say:

A new actor will play the “Original Form Sauron” Character in the later episodes of The Rings of Power Season 2, not Charlie Vickers.

His character has been described as “Angelic” and “beautiful” in his design with a black and gold costume colour palette and long black hair.

Charlie Vickers (Halbrand) has spent most of his time on the Mordor sets and is clean shaven but his character design and makeup has a “fiery” and “ashy” look to it.

Now if this is legit, then it definitely sounds like Annatar. However there are some potential issues with that character. Whilst the role Annatar plays in the forging of the Rings does appear in the appendix of The Lord of the Rings, the name Annatar does not. We know that Amazon has the rights to The Lord of the Rings and it appears that is all. It’s therefore possible the character is just never named bt for all intents and purposes it is Annatar.

There are other possibilities though. However, once again we could be veering outside of the rights Amazon holds. For example there could be a flashback shown briefly of Mairon. Mairon was Sauron’s original name, before he was corrupted by Melkor (Morgoth). That’s something I’d love to see, but I just don’t think Amazon would be allowed to go that far.

So far though, the writing on Season 1 was hardly award winning. Therefore, I’m going down the Occam’s Razor route here. The simplest explanation is also the most likely. I’m betting we will at some point see Sauron show up looking wonderful and Elvan like. He will then help create the Seven and the Nine with Celebrimbor, who won’t recognize him. This may be set out of sequence, or Sauron may not forge the One until Season 3? Frankly the order of the Rings has been all messed up already, so all bets are off.
