I love horror movies. I really enjoy a good scare that is earned through building atmosphere, engendering connections to the characters and use of imagery. I don’t care for the “boo, gotcha” scares or gore being used as the scare. That doesn’t mean I don’t love gratuitous use of blood and guts, just that it should enhance a scare not be the scare. Anyways…
The Conjuring franchise has delivered a couple of genuinely creepy movies, and the Annabelle doll at the center of it all is a good scare vessel. If you like this world you’ll be happy with the trailer above and you’ll mark your calendar for June 28th so you can be first in the chute.
If you haven’t been following this cinematic universe you’ll need to know a few things. First, Ed and Lorraine Warren are demonologists/paranormal investigators that have been involved with a lot of paranormal events. Second, they’ve collected a lot of relics and scary items. Third, they’ve brought the Annabelle doll to their house. Add in some scared young girls and you’ve got yourself another money maker… I’m guessing. Let’s see: creepy doll + kids (are are naturally creepy) + human desire to protect kids = $$$…. Yup, it checks out! If this film’s budget is in the $15 million range like it’s predecessor, it’ll be hard for this movie to not make money. The last film made over $300 million worldwide!
The official synopsis is:
Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren bring the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home, placing her “safely” behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, who all set their sights on a new target—the Warrens’ ten-year-old daughter, Judy, and her friends.
