Anne Hathaway On The Hardest Part Of The Oscars Gig

We’re at an interesting point with the upcoming Oscars ceremony. Following the sacking of Kevin Hart as host, they’ve struggled to really find anyone interested in taking it on solo. As a result, they’ve opted to shoot for a band of A-listers to help draw in the crowds, and if a recent rumor is any indication, we may see the Avengers host the Oscars.

But it’s no secret that hosting this thing is a tough gig. Almost no one seems to like it, and no matter how well one does, one is bound to face an enormous amount of criticism. But, of course, most of us only know about all this secondhand. Anne Hathaway, on the other hand, knows firsthand. If you’ll recall, several years back, she and James Franco co-hosted the Oscars in a ceremony that was lambasted by viewers at the time.

Speaking with ET, the actress opened up about the toughest part of the job:

“The next day (Laughs). Finding out how you actually did. ‘Cause it feels nice. Everyone tells you it’s going well. While you are doing it, it’s just like doing anything.”

Of course, at the time, it’s hard to stay objective in the moment, and those backstage are hardly going to tell her she’s doing a terrible job, right? Regardless, Hathaway seems to have the right perspective:

“My approach to all this stuff is really simple. We’re lucky. Whether or not it does well or it bombs, this is the stuff of dreams. This is not something to get upset about. Now that being said, when it really bombs it does sting a little bit (Laughs). And that I know.”

Well, as much as folks like to give the hosts a hard time, it seems clear now, more than ever, just how difficult it is to keep something that big entertaining for so long. Will this year’s attempt to have multiple hosts ultimately be a positive thing for the Academy? One can hope!
