Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania Only Second MCU Movie Classed As Rotten on RT

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is currently only the second MCU movie to be sitting at rotten status on RT.

I’ve been really hyped to see Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but perhaps was wrong? Quantumania is only the second MCU movie to be sitting at rotten status currently on RT. As of writin, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has 141 critic reviews with an average of only 53%. I’m sure I do not need to explain to you that this is abnormal for any MCU movie.

In fact the only other MCU movie sitting at rotten is Eternals with an overall critics score of 47%. Now, not all reviews for Quantumania are out yet. However as you will likely already understand, once the trend starts moving so emphatically in one direction, it would take a stream of overly positive reviews to course correct at this point.

Surprisingly this is in contrast to social media reactions, which were all very positive. I do wonder at some of the sources of these bad reviews. Specifically I mean why their social media reactions were effectively watered down, because they really were? Is this designed not to annoy the studio too early, or something like that? I know LRM‘s own Manny Gomez gave his social media reactions, and they pretty much matched with his thoughts on the movie, he enjoyed it more than a lot of others recently. Subjectivity and all that I guess?

I know some of the others in team LRM/GenreVerse will be watching over the next few days so I’m interested to see what they think? I’m pretty sure I’ll be unable to go till next week due to my wife’s shift work pattern. I’m kinda sad about that as I really wanted to catch this one opening weekend which I’ve not done for the last few MCU releases.

As for what criticisms I am hearing from the reviews, let me try to surmise. A common criticism is that Majors is great, one of the best Marvel villains in fact. However, when Majors is not on screen, the movie doesn’t work as well. Some of the dialogue is supposedly not brilliant either. That runs across most reviews, however there are also more subjective issues such as some who feel it was too serious a movie for Ant-Man and various other issues.

Given this is the start of Phase 5, I’m sure Marvel Studios hoped this would be a bit of a rocket. Box office wise we just don’t know yet and audience reactions could be very positive still. After all some critics just don’t like Marvel movies. However I’m sure Marvel also hoped the critical consensus would be far beyond where it sits now.

I won’t start moaning about a drop in quality until I see the movie for myself. If I think it didn’t work, I’ll call it that way. At that point I will then be starting to wonder whether Feige and his team has lost the magic they once had? However I’m not quite there, yet.

What do you think as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is currently only the second MCU movie to be sitting at rotten status on RT? Shocked, or simply don’t care what critics think of superhero movies? If you do see the movie this weekend, come back and let us know if you agree with the critical consensus or not?
