Overall it was a good weekend at the box office. According to Comscore, the numbers are ahead of last year’s numbers by 47%. For this weekend, it was going to be interesting to see how Marvel Studios’ latest box office offering, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania would perform in its second week, despite mixed reviews and reactions. Via Variety, it’s no surprise that the third Ant-Man film took first place. But it suffered a devastating second week. After a $106 million opening weekend, it added $32.2 million which marks a 69% decline. This film now holds the highest week-to-week drop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe taking the mantel from Thor: Love and Thunder. Overall the latest Ant-Man film has brought in $364 million worldwide. The MCU’s next attempt at a box-offie hit will be with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May.
On a positive note was the film that came in second place this weekend, Elizabeth Banks’ horror-comedy, Cocaine Bear. The rated-R film exceeded expectations and earned $23 million domestically and $5.3 million internationally. This is a good sign as the film was budgeted at roughly $35 million.

Universal seems to be in a horror groove in 2023. In early January they had another surprise horror hit with the killer robot doll film M3GAN which brought in $170 million globally and is now available via Peacock.
In third place, Lionsgate’s religious drama Jesus Revolution brought in a surprising $15.5 million after expecting to bring in about $6 to $7 million. Rounding up the fourth and fifth place are Avatar: The Way of Water and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The box office juggernaut brought in an additional $4.7 million and the Dreamworks animated film was right behind them with $4.1 million.
2023 box office numbers are going to continue to benefit from quite an array of films coming soon to theaters. These include the Michael B. Jordan-directed Creed III, the latest chapter of Ghostface in Scream VI, the next superhero film Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and the action-packed John Wich: Chapter 4.
