Anthony Daniels Wants Threepio To Live On After Him In Star Wars

C-3PO, or Threepio to fans, is a character synonymous with Star Wars. Anthony Daniels first played the character in Star Wars in 1977 and has now been in every episode of the Skywalker Saga. The only Star Wars films Daniels has not appeared in were Rogue One and Solo, neither of which would have suited a Threepio appearance given the content of the movies. However, now that the Skywalker Saga is ending with this December’s The Rise of Skywalker, does that mean an end to everyone’s favorite protocol droid?

Well, not according to Anthony Daniels himself, the veteran Star Wars actor recently released an autobiography I am C-3PO: The Inside Story. In the book’s final chapter Daniels talks about leaving the roe and how he envisions someone else taking over the acting duties at some point in the future.

“I surely recognize, I will someday leave the stage. I hope I will do so in the knowledge that I have imbued See-Threepio with enough life that, with the love of the fans, he will go on without me.”

Radio Times then caught up with Daniels to ask about this and he said the following.

“Yes, I quite countenance that, there are people wandering around Disney theme parks, dressed in rather better suits than mine. They seem to move a lot more easily. I absolutely admit and accept that. And quite right: he is too good of a character, too big of a character, to die with me. And Disney paid a lot of money for him! You know what I mean? They’ve got to get their money back somehow.”

I think it’s fair for Daniels to want to retire at some point and there really is no major reason why the role cannot be recast, even a voice change could be explained away easily enough with some sort of programming change. However, should the character of Threepio be ‘retired’ after the Skywalker Saga is complete, I’d have to say yes. I also say this as someone who thinks Threepio and Artoo should have been a bigger part of the current sequel trilogy than they have been so far. I know Threepio seems to have a bigger part in The Rise of Skywalker, we think, but my The Last Call Podcast co-host Kyle Malone and I both agree that we have missed the interactions between these old droid friends so far.

I do not think I would feel the same about any future Star Wars movies which are not a part of the Skywalker Saga though, so if this is truly the end of the main episodes of Star Wars, then I feel Threepio should die as a character with that saga, same goes with Artoo. Any future movies are likely to be set in the past, or the future, and there appears no reason to shoehorn in Threepio or Artoo. I find myself wanting the same things as those fans who are happy Threepio and Artoo were not a big part of the ST, because they wanted to see new things, I just disagree when it comes to the Skywalker Saga itself.

Is Threepio that big a character that Disney are looking at him as a money maker, did they really spend all that money for Threepio, I wouldn’t have thought so to be honest, but who knows? Of course, it is possible that Disney could decide to carry on the adventures of Rey, Finn, or Poe, and if they do, then there is I guess no particular reason why Threepio would not be involved. Yet, this would also feel like a continuation of the Skywalker Saga to me, rather than a new set of stories, and I’m not sure that’s something they should be thinking about anytime soon.

Do you want to see Threepio carry on after Daniels, or shod the character be retired with the actor who brought him to life? The odds of successfully navigating the comments field are approximately 3720-1, ignore them like Han and leave your thoughts anyway.
