In a recent interview lead star Anthony Mackie explains why Captain America is able to fight Red Hulk in Brave New World without the Super Soldier Serum. Marvel seems to be insistent on Mackie’s Captain American not ever getting the Super Soldier juice-up that his predecessor did. I’ve been critical of that for a while and the comments from Mackie we are sharing here just add to that feeling for me.
Mackie spoke at the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Singapore earlier this week. Comments below as reported by Deadline.
“It’s very different with the serum — you can fight anybody,” said Mackie. “When you don’t have the serum, you have to be smart and engineer different ways of defeating [enemies]. With Sam, him being a counselor, he uses more of his brains than brawn. He uses more of his wit than his fist. He’s more of a friend to everyone.”
Well, I dunno about you guys, but I’m excited to see Sam really kick some counselling butt in the therapy room. So then how the heck can he possibly fight a Hulk?

“It’s a high-tech suit,” he added. “I went to Wakanda, met with everybody in Wakanda, we had dinner. It was a great time. They threw me a welcome party. It was dope. But when I was leaving, they gave me a suit, right? I put it on. I can kick harder, I can fly faster, and it gives me the ability to be more agile in my skills, so it’s taking all my skills to a completely different level.”
Okay, so Cap can fight anybody, just like Steve, because he has a fancy suit? So he’s Iron Man with a Cap skin? Look I get it, suspension of disbelief. Marvel characters regularly change power levels in the MCU depending on a directors vision. Cap himself went from normal Human+ to grounding a helicopter with his bare hands between Avengers and The Winter Soldier. I’m just saying, give Sam the serum and then you have the opportunity to have him fight without the suit when needed using only the shield. Hey, maybe I’ll be proved very wrong in this criticism? So be it.
