Apple Original Films Releases Trailer for Siân Heder’s Being Heumann

Apple Original Films today released the trailer for “Being Heumann,” the new drama from Academy Award-winning writer, director, and producer Siân Heder (“CODA”). The film tells the true story of disability rights activist Judy Heumann, who led more than a hundred young people in a radical act of defiance: they took over the San Francisco Federal Building to fight for equal rights.

The trailer arrives just before the film’s Gala presentation at the BFI London Film Festival. It follows the film’s opening night premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. “Being Heumann” opens in select theaters on November 6, 2026, and premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, November 13, 2026.

The film’s logline sums up its spirit: they wouldn’t take Judy Heumann’s phone calls, so she took their building. The story is set in 1977. Heumann, a young disabled woman played by Ruth Madeley, and a scrappy coalition of outsiders decide they’ve had enough. One impulsive act grows into the longest occupation of a federal building in American history. Hundreds of people spontaneously seize government offices and refuse to leave until the bureaucrat standing in their way, played by Mark Ruffalo, takes action.

As the protest grows, the movement’s accidental leaders must find a way forward where no one has paved a path, bringing rebellion in all its forms into the halls of government. Heder’s film is described as a revolutionary, irreverent, and deeply human story of the least likely people trying to pull off the impossible and change millions of lives.

Heder wrote the screenplay with Rebekah Taussig. Heder produced the film with David Permut for Permut Presentations, John Beach, Kevin Cleary, and Kevin Walsh for the Walsh Company. Executive producers are Jim LeBrecht, Diana Pokorny, Ann Molin, and Kristen Joiner. Joiner co-wrote Heumann’s best-selling memoir, Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist, which gives the film its title.

Madeley and Ruffalo lead a large ensemble cast that includes Dylan O’Brien, Madeline Delp, Roberta Colindrez, Jon Beavers, Antwan Tolliver, Ray Fisher, Andrew Pilkington, Michael Patrick Thornton, Russell Harvard, Daniel Durant, Charlie Rush-Reese, Rio Finnegan, D’Arcee Charington Neal, Will Brill, Rob Delaney, Matthew August Jeffers, Siena Rafter and Rein Barcel.

The film has already drawn strong reactions on the festival circuit, and the new trailer gives audiences a first look at the occupation that became a turning point for disability rights in the United States.
