The mystery thriller series Sunny is a testament to the unique storytelling skills of its creators. Katie Robbins, the creator/showrunner/executive producer, and Lucy Tcherniak, the executive producer/director, have carefully navigated to bring to life a world based on the novel “The Dark Manuel” by Colin O’Sullivan, cleverly portraying robots and Japanese culture in an interesting world.
The series Sunny boasts a stellar cast, including Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation, Celeste & Jesse Forever) as Suzie, Joanna Sotomura (Barry, The Good Place), annie the clumsy (Ane No Koe, Miss Osaka), Jun Kunimura (Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Kate), Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car, The Wind Rises), Judy Ongg (Love Can Forgive and Forget), Fares Belkheir, and YOU (Nobody Knows, Still Walking).
Here is the official synopsis:
Sunny stars Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first, Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship. Together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family and become dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.

Katie Robbins was a staff writer in the 1930s drama series The Last Tycoon and The Affair.
Lucy Tcherniak started directing short films with I Stood Up, Dominic, The Truth About Stanley, and Lay Me Down. In 2017, she directed a few episodes of The End of the F***ing World.
Sunny, a ten-episode mystery thriller, premieres globally with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 10. It will then premiere one new episode weekly on Apple TV+ through September 4.
