Aquaman has come and gone for Warner Bros., and the movie went on to exceed everyone’s expectations in terms of the box office haul. In addition to breaking $1 billion in ticket sales, it also went on to be the highest grossing DC film of all time. Not DC Extended Universe: DC in general. Yes, that includes each entry in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, and that’s no small feat.
With this amazing performance, Warner Bros. would be stupid not to do a follow-up film, and we already know that director James Wan has had a hand in developing the script with scribe David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (who was on the writers on the first Aquaman film). From there, he will be deciding whether or not he wants to direct the film, so the man clearly has a whole lot of clout and power at the studio.

Now, THR is reporting that Aquaman 2 has a release date of December 16, 2022. You read that right: 2022.
I know, I’m actually kind of surprised as well. Given how well it’s doing, you think they’d fast-track this one, but for one reason or another, they’re allowing there to be a four-year gap in between movies. In all honesty, the DCEU has a pretty jam-packed slate for the next few years, so I guess that’s the main reason why. This also gives Wan and co. plenty of time to get a script in order worth making.
All in all, Warner Bros. has had a bad habit of rushing out movies to meet release dates, so it’s kind of refreshing that they’re giving this time to stew as their either DC franchises take root. They realize they should be capitalizing on the potential of unrealized properties more than following up sure-things, which has led them astray in the past.
