Aquaman: Director James Wan Talks About The Freedom He Had To Make The Picture He Wanted

Aquaman is hoping to reignite the interest of movie audiences in DC’s gallery of heroes on the big screen, and it does so after a series of critical disappointments and even a huge box office flop in Justice League.

One of the major issues around Justice League seems to be the ever present meddling of the studio, which of course resulted in Zack Snyder leaving the project for personal reasons and Joss Whedon being brought in to almost reshoot half of the movie. The results were, less than perfect, but was that the reason for the box office flop?

It’s fair to wonder then how much freedom James Wan had when directing Aquaman, given the heavy-handed approach the studio took with Justice League. Speaking in an interview with NY Times Wan said he actually had a lot of freedom to do as he wanted and that if the movie doesn’t work, then it’s all on him.

“It’s pretty crazy. For as big a movie as “Aquaman” is, I could not have had more freedom. I had all the big tools and the budget to paint on a really big canvas, but with the freedom I had on, let’s say, “Saw” or “Insidious.” So if the movie works, or doesn’t work, I have no one to blame but myself.”

Whilst I have not seen Aquaman yet, I have heard mixed reports from people I trust that have seen the movie. Some have said it was pretty fun, and others didn’t care for it that much. I guess like you readers I have to judge it for myself, I do hope to catch the movie sometime in the next week or so if possible.

All I want is a fun movie at this point, it doesn’t have to be The Shawshank Redemption of comic book movies. Fingers crossed that Wan’s movie delivers on that front if nothing else.

What do you think of Wan’s comments and the freedom he had to make the picture he wanted? Shout out to us in the usual place below as always.
