Aquaman: How Much Input James Wan Had In Jason Momoa’s Casting

Remember back when it was first announced that Jason Momoa would be taking on the role of Aquaman? It was back when the future of the DC Extended Universe was still bright and folks were anticipated these shiny new takes on their beloved characters. Momoa wasn’t the most obvious choice, but he was a cool one. Hell, if nothing else, director Zack Snyder should get credit for his great eye for casting.

But was this purely a Snyder decision? As the helmer of Batman v Superman and Justice League, he obviously played a big role in the whole casting ordeal, but does that mean Aquaman director James Wan was kept out of the loop? Wan had a chance to speak on this with NY Times. Here’s what he had to say:

Even though Zack [Snyder] was making Justice League, I was kept in the loop by DC and Warner Bros., and they really wanted my input into the two leads. The great thing about casting Jason is, any jokey perception that people have of Aquaman goes right out the window. He completely nullifies any disrespect that people have for this character. Everybody knows how tough and strong Jason Momoa is. I wanted to show people the more lighthearted side of him, the goofy side of him. I worked very hard to pull it out of him, and Jason would be the first to say that I took him out of his comfort zones, quite a few times.

While it doesn’t sound like he was incredibly hands-on with the casting here, it does at least feel like he was given some power. If nothing else,it sounds like he and Snyder were at least on the same page with what they wanted to accomplish through the casting of Momoa.

On the whole, it does seem like they accomplished what they set out to do, but will this make for a financially-successful film? Well, it’s already off to a decent start overseas, but we’re going to have to wait and see if domestic audiences have been convinced.
