Are You Afraid of the Dark?: Disturbia Director D.J. Caruso In Talks To Helm Film Adaptation

Hollywood is continuing to exploit our childhood, for better or worse. If you’re not a fan, I really don’t know what to tell you. But who’s to say it can’t be done well, right? One such property getting a big screen adaptation is what I consider to be a kind of companion franchise to R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps.

The series Are You Afraid of the Dark? aired around the same time as Goosebumps, but itself wasn’t based on any novel source material. But that didn’t stop it from being one hell of a big influence on me as a kid. Now this series is set to be adapted for the big screen for release in 2019 from the folks over at Paramount. We already know that IT writer Gary Dauberman is attached to pen the script, but now Bloody Disgusting is hearing that D.J. Caruso is in talks to helm the feature. If you’re heading straight to IMDb to look up what in the hell this guy has done before, you’re not alone. I had to do the same.

Most recently, Caruso helmed the gem xXx: Return of Xander Cage, but he may be best known for his work in the late-2000s, which saw him directing two back-to-back Shia LaBeouf movies Disturbia and Eagle Eye. On the whole, his filmography isn’t incredibly impressive, but with even his worst films, I’m not sure I’d point to the direction as the real problem.

So long as he’s given a great script, I can see him being a serviceable director to help take this franchise to the big screen.

For those unfamiliar, the series Are You Afraid of the Dark? started out each episode around a campfire with a group of kids who call themselves the Midnight Society. From there, one would tell a story that would serve as the basis for the rest of the episode. The stories were usually kid-friendly creepfests that were more eerie than scary, but always entertaining (at least to my kid mind).
