Arkham Asylum TV Series Not Moving Forward

According to a new report from Variety, the DCU Arkham Asylum TV series is not moving forward for Max.

According to a new report from Variety, the DCU Arkham Asylum TV series is not moving forward. This show has gone through the mill since its first inception. To begin with, this was going to be called Gotham PD and it was set in the Matt Reeves The Batman universe. Eventually as it was being developed Reeves announce it had morphed into an Arkham Asylum show.

Then the DCU happened. New co-head of DC Studios James Gunn said that Arkham Asylum had now morphed again into a DCU project and away from The Batman universe. Now as reported by Variety, it seems as though it has been abandoned entirely.

‘As Variety exclusively reported in October 2022, Antonio Campos had come onboard to serve as writer and showrunner of the series, which was originally meant to be set within the world of Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman.” But according to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Campos’ version will not proceed. It is still possible, though, that a new project set within the infamous Gotham City asylum could be developed in the future, the individual noted.’

As the article writer Joe Otterson clarified on social media, it is still possible this show could appear eventually. However, if it does, then it will be a new idea, likely began again from page one. This version of the show is dead.

I have to say I’m disappointed this one is going nowhere. I do hope that Gunn and Safran will consider developing this again after Batman: The Brave and the Bold. It does make sense that that film be allowed to define the style of the new Batman in the DCU. However, having a quality drama series about Arkham set within that world would be fun. Especially if Batman is allowed to occasionally show up, either in flashback form, or for visits to see patients, or bring them in etc.

I did however always feel it was strange to set this in the DCU, when so far Batman hasn’t been defined yet. It kinda feels like the move to make it DCU is what killed this one. Let’s hope it’s one day resurrected.

What do you think of the news the DCU Arkham Asylum TV series is not moving forward? Thoughts below.
