Art Directors Guild to Make a Splash at Comic-Con with Panels, Awards, and Exhibition

The highly anticipated Comic-Con event is just around the corner, and the Art Directors Guild, IATSE Local 800 (#ADG800), is gearing up to make a significant impact. With a strong presence scheduled for next week’s festivities at the San Diego Convention Center, the guild has announced an exciting lineup of three panels, an exhibition booth, and the presentation of special awards during the Masquerade.

The action-packed weekend will commence with two engaging panels on Friday. Kicking things off, the first panel, titled “Women of the Hollywood Art Department,” will take place in Room 9 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on July 21. This panel will feature esteemed panelists responsible for bringing to life some of the most captivating and immersive environments in film and TV. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from talented individuals such as Amelia Brooke (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Westworld), Danelle Davenport (Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, The Little Mermaid), Kelly Rae Hemenway (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Bullet Train), Rupali Ingle (Star Trek: Picard, Abbott Elementary), and Daniela Medeiros (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Thor: Ragnarok). The panel will be moderated by Kate Weddle (Yellowstone, WandaVision). Fans can also meet the panelists for autograph signing at Table# AA02 in the Sails Pavilion from 12:30 to 1:30 PM.

Following the inspiring women panel, artistry takes center stage once again with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 – The Art Department” in the same room from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This panel will delve into the creative process behind the visually stunning Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Panelists include acclaimed Production Designer Beth Mickle from IATSE Local 829 (The Suicide Squad, Drive), as well as Art Directors Guild members David Scott (Spider Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War), Lorin Flemming (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Justice League), Kelly Rae Hemenway (Bullet Train, Batman vs Superman), and Set Designer Tim Croshaw (Loki, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). Samantha Avila (Spiderman: No Way Home, Our Flag Means Death) will serve as the moderator. Attendees can meet the panelists for autograph signing at Table# AA02 in the Sails Pavilion from 3:30 to 4:30 PM.

On Saturday, fans can look forward to an exclusive glimpse into the artistry behind “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever- The Art Department” in Room 29CD from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The panel will explore the meticulous process of building the vibrant Afrocentric sci-fi world of Wakanda. Esteemed panelists include Oscar-winning Production Designer Hannah Beachler (Black Panther, Moonlight, Creed), Concept Artist Till Nowak (The Lion King, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Art Director Jason Clark (Mulan, Loki), Art Director Marlie Arnold (Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Loki), and Set Designer Tim Croshaw (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Aquaman). Jasmine Alexia Jackson (Snow White, Station Eleven) will moderate the discussion. Fans can meet the panelists for autograph signing at Table# AA02 in the Sails Pavilion from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.

Additionally, ADG 800 members will play a crucial role in the highly anticipated Masquerade event on Saturday evening. They will serve as judges and present two awards: The Art Directors Guild Cosplay Award for Original Concept Design, recognizing the entry that best embodies a wholly original concept, and The Art Directors Guild Cosplay Award for Best Visual Media Design, honoring the entry that most creatively interprets a character or concept from a television show or motion picture. Both awards come with a generous prize of $500.

Throughout Comic-Con, the ADG will engage with attendees at their booth located at #1500 in the main exhibition hall. Aspiring artists will have a unique opportunity to have their portfolios reviewed by ADG representatives on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Furthermore, the ADG Showcase website, www.adgshowcase.com, specifically launched for Comic-Con, will be accessible to the public, showcasing original artwork that has contributed to the creation of the most beloved movies and TV series.
