Avatar: What James Cameron Has Been Doing Since 2013 To Make These Movies

It’s taken a hot minute for the Avatar sequels to get made. Actually, it’s still taking a hot minute for the Avatar sequels to get made, as the first one is still a solid two years from hitting theaters. That means, when all said and done, it will have taken eight years between when the movie started getting worked on until release for the first one to come out.

But what’s taken so long? Yes, we know there’s a lot of tech and innovation going into this thing, but why so damn long? Speaking with Variety, director James Cameron discussed what it was they spent all this time doing.

“From 2013 until now we’ve mostly designed the whole world across four new movies. We’ve written, finished scripts for all four of those films. We’ve cast them, and we’ve [performance] captured movie 2, movie 3, and the first part of movie 4.

“We’re mostly done with the live-action. I’ve got a couple of months in New Zealand in spring, so we’re kind of on track with what we set out to do.

“People don’t really understand the scope and complexity of the process. It’s like making two and a half big animated films. A typical big animated film takes about four years, so, if you do the math on that, we’re kind of right on schedule for December 2021.”

Long story short…they’ve done a lot of the groundwork for the movies to come, but there’s still a lot more for them to do in the years between now and the first movie’s release. All in all, this is one of the movies I’m most interested in, simply because I want to see just how unique of a movie it will be from a tech standpoint.

What do you think of Cameron’s comments? Does it justify all the time we’ve had not watching these Avatar movies? Let us know down below!
