Some of the poor Avengers haven’t even been buried in the ground for a few months, and there are some fans crying to see some brought back to the big screen. As we reported on recently, some immature fans want to see Iron Man brought back from the dead, and other more normal fans are already looking to the future, seeing whether or not these heroes can be replaced in spirit with new characters. It makes sense, given the nature of the source material, we know that the end of one character is never the end in spirit.
But will this actually be the case in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? After all, this isn’t quite the same as rebooting Spider-Man every few years or Batman every decade. This is a living, breathing world with a running continuity, so it’s not as simple as just starting over. But what does one of Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus have to say on the subject?
“It’s the nature of the MCU,” Markus told Empire. “It’s not a place where you can reboot one and suddenly Iron Man is 15 years old and everyone else is still the same age. The characters have to pass out, and the universe has to still stand. So if you’re going to take people off the board, they’ve got to go for real. Granted, these are movies. I understand that somebody has made some kind of announcement that has the word ‘Vision’ in it, so I mean…”

“Black Widow sacrifices herself. Tony sacrifices himself. Steve, whose stock in trade is sacrificing himself, manages not to. It’s a nice reversal there,” Markus continued. He then went on to discuss the nature of longstanding consequences in this world. “It’s not fixed at the end – it’s undone, but the five years are still there. The trauma is still existent.”
Given that many of us fans have chastised Marvel Studios for its unwillingness to actually give us meaningful consequences, I think this is FANTASTIC news. While Markus is by no means the head honcho, I like these thoughts that we need to really feel the impact of everything that came before. That’s what makes this universe different from others, and that’s great.
Plus, with Fox’s properties heading in, they have more characters than ever to bring in. Sorry, Tony, Cap, and Black Widow. You had your time. I think we’re ready to see new superheroes inhabit this universe.
