Kate Winslet Lands Major Role In TLOTR: The Hunt For Gollum

Some big casting news as Kate Winslet (Titanic) has landed a major role in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. We had some rumors recently that the film was looking to recast the Liv Tyler (48) Arwen role. However, as you’d guess it seems highly unlikely that’s the role Winslet (50) has landed here. Before I do some speculation on who Winslet may be playing, here is the word on the casting as per Deadline

‘Kate Winslet will join Andy Serkis’ Middle-earth epic The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum in what has been described to Deadline by sources as the female lead, although the role has not been disclosed.’

‘Serkis and Peter Jackson spent most of last year coaxing Winslet to appear in the film, which means uprooting to New Zealand to shoot her scenes in the film from late May through to October.’

In terms of who I think Winslet may be playing? I can’t imagine it is anyone you know from the old movies. Is it possible Winslet is taking over the Galadriel role from Cate Blanchett? I suppose. If Arwen is in the film, it seems likely that Aragorn meets with her in Lorien. As any fan of the films knows, that’s where Galadriel (Arwen’s grandmother) lives/rules.

Though, Winslet at 50 is only 6 years younger than Blanchett herself. In my opinion Blanchett could pull it off, if Galadriel even appears? Therefore, Galadriel seems out to me, (unless Blanchett knocked back the chance and they need a recast of that calibre). So what else is there?

Well, we have heard (rumors) the film also follows the early life of Smeagol, aka Gollum. Winslet could therefore be playing a Stoor (Hobbit) matriarch in the family of Smeagol. Perhaps even the one who banished him to the wilderness? At this point that is about where my guesses end in terms of a lead role. Unless we also get an Aragorn backstory and then Gilraen (his mother) would be on the table.

It’s hard to guess a true timeline for this movie. You see, in the books, the hunt for Gollum took many, many years. It was 17 years from Bilbo’s birthday, when Frodo got the Ring, until Gandalf returned with the means to prove it was the One. However, the film makes it appear as though this was a matter of some months only.

My guess is, it would make sense to actually retcon that there really was 17 years of a gap. Possibly, with Frodo narrating and explaining the gap period in a prologue. It would also explain why Aragorn is younger than he was, a little. If there really is a trilogy (please, no more) it gives them 17 years to play with.

As you can see above there are rumors around Aragorn but these have yet to be reported by trades.

So, Kate Winslet lands a major role in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and we have no real idea who it is she will play. Leave your thoughts on the casting and my guess work below.
