It’s official folks following this weekend Avengers: Endgame retakes the title for all time box office champ ahead of Avatar, can Doomsday top it? We all knew this was a strong possibility given how close the difference was between Avatar after its re-release in Endgame. Marvel were after that top spot and they used some Doomsday hype to push it ahead.
I only wonder now what James Cameron will do to try and get top spot again, 4D with added smeollovision re-release? Whilst we don’t know what the final tally will be yet, Avengers: Endgame has now made $2.925B compared to Avatar‘s $2.923B. Spider-Man: Brand New Day sits in third at $2.505B, with trades saying a re-release is also planned for that film. These are not inflation adjusted of course, or we’d be looking at a different list entirely and Gone with the Wind still top from 1939.

Can Avengers: Doomsday actually catch and even top Avengers: Endgame? It is possible, as whilst right now outlets vary, they mostly average around an estimated $60m in pre-sales alone. That’s tracking much better in pre-sales than Spider-Man: Brand New Day was at the same period.
Opening week is going to be absolutley massive but of course it remains to be seen how the film will be received. If fans love it and the hype and word of mouth spreads, it could go all the way. If fans are less than happy with it overall, or it doesn’t catch the hype, then repeat viewings and casual viewings may not match expectations.
In other words, this movie would make a profit if we turn up and we’ve seen 90% of the film in trailers and the rest is just RDJ reding Latverian poetry. But it needs to be good to challenge Avengers: Endgame.
Avengers: Doomsday is released December 18th domestically and up to two days earlier in some regions globally.
